Starbucks to test reusable cups at London airport

Starbucks will reportedly test a new type of reusable cup at London’s Gatwick Airport this month as it looks to increase sustainability measures.

The airport’s Starbucks locations will charge customers 5 pence, or about 6 cents, for a disposable cup while offering reusable ones for free as part of the monthlong trial, Bloomberg reports.

{mosads}Starbucks estimates that if only 250 customers switched from nonreusable to reusable per day, the monthlong trial could save more than 7,000 cups, according to the news outlet. The airport  recycles most of the 7 million disposable coffee cups its travelers use each year, it added.

The company will also track how many reusable cups are returned to see what collection points are performing best, Bloomberg noted.

The coffee chain announced last July that it would phase out plastic straws from all of its stores by 2020.

It’s also pledged at least $10 million to help develop recyclable, compostable cups for serving hot beverages.
