Tlaib’s grandmother to Trump: ‘May God ruin’ you

The grandmother of Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), did not mince words about President Trump in a recent interview after he roped her into a heated back and forth with her granddaughter following the Israeli government’s decision to bar her from entering the territory.

“Trump tells me I should be happy Rashida is not coming. May God ruin him,” Muftia Tlaib said in an interview with Reuters released on Saturday morning.

{mosads}Her comments arrive in response to a tweet Trump shared on Friday, in which the president wrote that Tlaib’s grandmother was the “only real winner” after the congresswoman said she wouldn’t visit her grandmother in the West Bank, citing the controversial move by the Israeli government.

“She doesn’t have to see her now!” Trump tweeted.

He also accused the congresswoman of grandstanding by turning down an offer from the Israeli government later on Friday to file a humanitarian request to enter the country instead. 

The Michigan Democrat and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, were barred from entering Israel for their support for the international boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement over its treatment of the Palestinians, the country announced Friday.

The announcement to deny both congresswomen, who planned to visit the territory later this month, came shortly after Trump urged the country to do so over Twitter on Friday morning.

“It would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep. Tlaib to visit. They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds. Minnesota and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office. They are a disgrace!” Trump tweeted.

Tlaib’s uncle told Reuters that the congresswoman hasn’t seen her grandmother in a decade.

“She was going to slaughter a sheep when Rashida arrived and prepare her favorite food, stuffed vine leave,” he said, adding: “Rashida sees her granny as a second mother, she has always supported her. Rashida says she owes her success to her grandmother.”

“Trump has told Rashida and Ilhan to go back to their home countries. What a contradiction, yesterday he asked them to leave and today he asks that they aren’t let in,” he continued, citing comments made by the president earlier this year in which told four minority lawmakers of color to “go back” to where they came from.

However, Tlaib’s grandmother told the news agency that her heart tells her that her granddaughter “will come” eventually.

The White House and Tlaib’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.
