Gabby Giffords participating in gun violence town hall in El Paso following mass shooting

Former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) is attending a gun violence town hall in El Paso, Texas, just weeks after a mass shooting rocked the city.

The ¡YA BASTA! Latinos Rise Against Gun Violence and Hate El Paso Town Hall, organized by the Latino Victory Project, is being held Thursday evening and will also feature Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas.), according to the El Paso Times

{mosads}Giffords is a gun violence survivor who left the House following a shooting at a constituent meeting in her home district of Tuscon, Ariz., that left her critically injured and six people dead.

Since leaving public office she has committed her time to advocating for gun control. Her husband, Mark Kelly, is running as a Democratic candidate for the Arizona Senate seat held by Sen. Martha McSally (R).

Giffords runs a prominent gun control advocacy group that bears her name.

The organization hosting the town hall Thursday in El Paso will also make stops in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio next week.

Twenty-two people were killed by a lone gunman in El Paso who opened fire in a Walmart earlier this month. The suspect allegedly authored a racist, anti-immigrant manifesto that warned of an invasion of the U.S. by Hispanics.

The El Paso incident was followed just hours later by a shooting in Dayton, Ohio, that claimed nine lives. The back-to-back shootings reopened the debate on gun control legislation in recent weeks.
