Holder leaning toward prosecuting interrogators

Attorney General Eric Holder is now “leaning toward” appointing a criminal prosecution into CIA official who may have used torture in their interrogations of terrorism detainees after Sept. 11, the Washington Post reports.

The investigation would center on interrogators that use techniques beyond what was authorized by the Bush Justice Department, according to the report.

Holder could make his decision about the prosecutor in the next few weeks, according to the report, setting up a showdown with the Obama administration that has sought to avoid looking backwards at interrogation abuses committed during the previous administration.

Several congressional Democrats, including Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (Vt.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), have called for a truth commission and investigation into what interrogation techniques were used.

Holder has been open to appointing prosecutor since he was confirmed for his office, according to the report, and a recent secret CIA watchdog report that he has reviewed may have persuaded him.

The report comes just hours after the New York Times broke a story that former Vice President Dick Cheney ordered the CIA to keep a secret program from Congress.
