FDNY to add 22 firefighters who died of 9/11-related illnesses to Memorial Wall

The New York City Fire Department will add the names of 22 firefighters who died from 9/11-related illnesses to the FDNY Memorial Wall.

The FDNY Memorial Wall is a tribute to firefighters killed during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, or from the lasting health effects from their response that day.

{mosads}Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro, First Deputy Commissioner Laura Kavanaugh and Chief of Department John Sudnik will add the names in a ceremony on Friday, USA Today reported. The name placement will occur five days before the 18th anniversary of 9/11.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that about 400,000 people were exposed to toxic dust and materials when the World Trade Center collapsed. 

The CDC created the World Trade Center Health Program, which enrolls more than 76,000 responders as of June, to assist people struggling with the health conditions caused by 9/11.

These health conditions could include chronic sinus infections, asthma and PTSD, according to the program’s website.

Approximately 343 New York Fire Department firefighters died during the 9/11 attacks, according to History.com. More than 200 others have died because of 9/11-related conditions, according to New York Mayor City Bill de Blasio.
