Amash: ‘Bolton never should have been hired’

Independent Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.) reacted to Tuesday’s news that national security adviser John Bolton had been ousted from the Trump administration by saying he should never have been hired in the first place.

“I hope the president’s next national security adviser will focus on securing peace, not expanding war,” tweeted Amash, who left the Republican Party earlier this year after backing President Trump’s impeachment.

Trump announced on Twitter that Bolton would be leaving his post, citing disagreements with his suggestions but not providing specifics.

{mosads}Trump added that Bolton submitted his resignation on Tuesday and that he would tap a new national security adviser next week.

Amash, who has not ruled out challenging Trump for the White House in 2020, has firmly staked out his opposition to U.S. military activity not sanctioned by Congress, a stance at odds with several of Bolton’s hawkish policies.

Appointed in March 2018, Bolton was Trump’s third national security adviser.

The president broke with Bolton on a number of key issues, including the administration’s approach to Iran and the relevance of North Korean missile tests.
