Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) on Tuesday doubled down on his calls for House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) to be censured and removed from the Democratic-led impeachment inquiry against President Trump.
“Adam Schiff is someone who not only ought to be censured but is someone who certainly should not be leading this whole inquiry,” Hice, who is a member on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, told Hill.TV during an appearance on “Rising.”
“He lies to the American people, putting words in the mouth of the president of the United States as though these are words that the president said — they were not whatsoever,” he added.
Hice’s comments come after the Democratic-led House rejected a resolution to censure Schiff in a 218-185 vote.
The resolution claimed that Schiff had “misled the American people” and made “a mockery of the impeachment process.”
Republicans specifically took issue with Schiff’s account of President Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a hearing in September. Though Schiff maintained that his remarks were intended as a “parody,” Republicans condemned the marks as a “manufactured” and “false retelling” of Trump’s communications with Ukraine.
Following the failed GOP resolution, Hice posted a video denouncing the decision, calling it an “incredible disappointment.”
“He has shirked his responsibilities as Chairman, abandoned his duty as a Congressman, & forgotten his sense of fairness & justice throughout this impeachment hoax,” said in a tweet accompanying the video. “It’s shameful that not one Dem voted to hold him accountable.”
Schiff, who has become a prominent figure in the impeachment probe, later hit back at House Republicans, saying that they “lacked the courage to confront” the president.
