Senate Republicans give remarks on border security bill: Watch live

Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), are slated to give remarks Wednesday morning on the border security deal, pushing back against the bipartisan deal that was unveiled earlier this year.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) plans to hold a vote to advance the legislation Thursday, but no Republican senator has said they will vote for it. The deal, introduced in February, was even endorsed by the National Border Patrol Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Republicans cited President Biden’s decision to stop construction of the border wall, expand the parole of migrants into the country and end the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy in threatening to block the bill from advancing to debate. They also argued they do not expect to get a chance to amend it with proposals they said would make it stronger.

The press conference is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EDT.
