Radio host Charlamagne tha God slammed former President Trump on Tuesday as a “threat to democracy,” arguing the former president “led an attempted coup.”

Charlamagne, who hosts “The Breakfast Club,” quipped he has “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” and agreed with actor Robert De Niro, who spoke on behalf of President Biden’s reelection campaign during a press conference held Tuesday nearby Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan.

“Let the record show, I totally agree with Robert De Niro. I am one of the people who suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome,” Charlamagne said in an interview on Fox News. “I think he is a threat to democracy.”

“I think that he led an attempted coup of this country,” he added, likely referencing Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Charlamagne pointed to the claim that Trump sought to suspend parts of the Constitution to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which he lost to President Biden.

“At the least, that’s just not a patriotic thing to say,” he said.

When pressed by Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, who said he does not believe the assertion, Charlamagne noted Trump suggested it in a Truth Social post in December 2022.

“A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” Trump wrote in the post.

“He said we should suspend the Constitution to overthrow the results of the election,” Charlamagne added. “He said it on Truth Social, then said he didn’t say it.”

Last week, the radio personality said he plans to vote for the candidate who he thinks “can preserve democracy,” while noting he thinks both Trump and Biden, the presumptive party nominees, “are trash” as candidates.

Charlamagne endorsed Biden in 2020 but declined to do so this time around, telling “The View” last week, “If I think both candidates are trash, and I don’t feel like endorsing one, would you rather me endorse an individual or endorse the fact that, hey, we need to go out there and protect democracy?”

“If I’m sitting here telling my listeners that you have somebody out there who is a threat to democracy, you have somebody out there who said they want to suspend the Constitution to overthrow the results of an election, you saw this person try to lead an attempted coup of this country,” he said, adding, “There’s only two candidates out there.”

The host has also indicated he will vote for Biden despite not endorsing him, though he has not stopped short of criticizing the incumbent at times. Last year, he called on Biden to drop out of the White House race amid low poll numbers.

The Hill reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
