Jeffries does not say whether he is concerned Trump’s conviction will help him win election
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) emphasized there is a strong “contrast” between President Biden and former President Trump but did not say whether Democrats should be concerned that Trump’s conviction in the hush money case will help him win reelection.
“Well, this election will present a clear contrast between President Biden and Democrats in the House and the Senate who will always continue to put people over politics,” Jeffries said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when asked how “concerned” Democrats should be that a guilty verdict may help Trump’s campaign.
“Extreme MAGA Republicans are going to continue to lie for Donald Trump. President Biden and Democrats are going to continue to solve problems for hard-working American taxpayers. Extreme MAGA Republicans will continue to lie for Donald Trump,” he added.
Trump was found guilty of 34 charges of falsifying business records Thursday — a jury verdict that Trump and his allies immediately decried. Some Republicans have suggested that the guilty verdict will only strengthen Trump’s support, which is an argument that Democrats have already pushed back on.
Biden said Friday that Trump’s claims that the trial was “rigged” are “irresponsible” and “reckless.” The campaign also reiterated Friday that Trump’s response to his conviction should prove he “cannot be president.”
Jeffries continued to try and differentiate the Democrats from Republicans, saying that his party is focused on getting “real results.” He still did not say whether Democrats should be concerned about Trump’s guilty verdict helping the former president.
“President Biden and Democrats are going to work on delivering real results, as has been the case for the last three and a half months. And we’re going to see that extreme MAGA Republicans will continue to lie for Donald Trump and present no real vision for dealing with the issues of importance to the American people. That’s a contrast,” he said.
“And I’d rather be on President Biden’s side of that contrast than on the extreme MAGA Republican side,” he said.
