Sununu on Trump sentencing date before convention: ‘That’s a terrible idea’
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) said it is a “terrible idea” to have former President Trump’s sentencing just four days before the Republicans’ national convention in July.
Sununu said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the jury “did their job” in the hush money case, which he described as “politically driven.” He added that the verdict will be appealed before criticizing the sentencing date in the case.
“This is not over by any stretch. And I think it’s a real problem, the fact that they’re … going to commit sentencing right before the convention. That’s a terrible idea. I mean, that is a terrible idea that’s gonna do nothing but rile everybody up,” Sununu said.
“It’s gonna look even more political than it is now. And just cast a shadow of a doubt on this entire case,” he added.
Sununu, who has openly criticized the former president, also said he will still support Trump despite the conviction. He endorsed Trump for the White House shortly after former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) dropped out of the GOP primary race.
A jury found Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to a reimbursement made to his ex-fixer, Michael Cohen, for a payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair with Trump. Trump has denied the affair and labeled the case as politically motivated against him.
Now, Trump is slated to be sentenced on July 11, which is just four days before the Republican National Committee’s convention is set to start. Trump will likely be officially nominated as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate at the convention.
Trump and Republicans have already seized on the guilty verdict to raise money and campaign on. The Trump campaign brought in roughly $35 million one day after the verdict in the hush money trial was reached, they announced Friday.
