Syracuse University student arrested after alleged anti-racist graffiti

A Syracuse University student has reportedly been arrested in connection to graffiti in support of protests against a series of racist incidents on campus. 

Syracuse Police Sgt. Matthew Malinowski said  the student has been accused of criminal mischief and making graffiti, according to CNN.

The university’s department of public safety said in a statement that its police made an arrest after graffiti was discovered on campus, but did not detail what the graffiti looked like. 

It noted that recently reported “bias incidents” that included racist graffiti were still being investigated. 

On Wednesday, University Chancellor Kent Syverud told the university senate that there have been 12 incidents of racist and anti-Semitic graffiti, an incident of verbal assault directed at a female, African American student and reports that students had been “AirDropped” a white supremacist document. 

Syracuse said Tuesday that it was tightening its security after the AirDrop incident. 

The university, in a statement, outlined “urgent” responses it would take to student concerns. These responses include: “additional resources to assure greater safety for our students,” “clarity in the Code of Student Conduct,” making facility decisions that “support a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students” and “hiring additional staff in significant areas of concern.”

“We are by this response immediately committing extensive resources, including more than $1 million for curriculum development,” the statement said.
