Senator calls for review of US military programs for foreign nationals after Florida shooting

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) said he was “extremely concerned” about the U.S. military training foreign nationals following the shooting Friday that left four people dead and multiple more wounded at Pensacola Naval Air Base in Pensacola, Fla.

Naval officials told The Associated Press that they had identified the shooter as 2nd Lt. Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, an aviation officer in the Saudi Air Force.  

According to the AP, Alshamrani was attending aviation school at the base, along with hundreds of other foreign military personnel that were receiving various types of training.

Alshamrani opened fire inside a classroom this morning.

“I’m extremely concerned by the reports that this shooter was a foreign national training on a U.S. military base in Florida,” the former Florida governor of said in a statement. “Today, I’m calling for a full review of the U.S. military programs to train foreign nationals on American soil.”

“There is no reason we should be providing state-of-the-art military training to people who wish us harm,” Scott continued. “And most importantly, there is no reason to risk the safety and security of our American men and women in uniform.”
