NFL star Khalil Mack pays off hometown Walmart’s holiday layaways
NFL star Khalil Mack donated $80,000 to pay off all active holiday layaway accounts at his hometown Walmart ahead of this year’s holiday season.
The Walmart in Fort Pierce, Fla., announced earlier this month that Mack made a donation to the retail chain to wipe out all customer debt at the store. The donation, which was made through Mack’s charity, the Khalil Mack Foundation, helped about 300 to 350 customers, a Walmart spokesperson told The Chicago Tribune.
“We have some wonderful News! If you have an active Holiday Layaway account at your local Ft. Pierce Wal-Mart, you account has been paid off!” the retailer said in a Facebook post.
“We here at Walmart would like to thank the Khalil Mack Foundation for your generosity, and for making so many families happy for the holidays! Everyone is truly greatful for everything you have done for them.”
Store manager Mathias Libardi told TCPalm.com that Mack, a four-time Pro Bowler currently playing for the Chicago Bears, made the donation after his foundation expressed that he wanted to be a “secret Santa.”
Mack, 28, has repeatedly used his foundation to give back to his local community.
In June, he shipped 100 pairs of Nike cleats to his former high school, Fort Pierce Westwood, for the upcoming football season.
His foundation declares its mission to “positively affect the lives of intercity and under-privileged youth and families by providing for the community, through educational and extra-curricular initiatives.”
