Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) is pushing for President Biden to have more “unscripted” moments in the wake of a rocky debate performance last week.

Coons, one of Biden’s closest allies in Congress and national co-chair of his campaign, reaffirmed his support for the president and called on him to conduct more interviews and hold more impromptu events to appeal to voters.

“We do need to see more unscripted and off-the-record moments. That is something I’m encouraging,” he told Kasie Hunt on Monday’s “CNN This Morning.”

His comments come after speculation swirled over Biden’s ability to serve another term in the White House following a staggering debate performance last week. Coons emphasized that Biden has held numerous events following the debate, adding that he should do more like that.

“I think that President Biden needs to reassure those who were paying attention by giving more and more of the sorts of interviews and impromptu events and engagements that put him in America’s living room in the first place,” he said.

“I’ve known Joe Biden for 30 years. Nobody does better than Joe, has worked in a fire station or union hall or coffee shop. He was at a Waffle House later that night in Atlanta. He worked a crowd at the Raleigh event. He’s had several events in New York in the last few days,” he continued.

The Biden campaign has maintained he will not be dropping out of the race amid calls to do so. Coons also said Monday that Biden should do another debate with former President Trump, but that he should be “better prepared.”

Coons made similar comments Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” where he reiterated that Biden is still the Democrats’ best chance to beat Trump in November.

“The stakes of this race couldn’t be higher. And the only Democrat who’s ever beaten Donald Trump is Joe Biden,” he said.

“He is our candidate for November. And he has the best shot to beat him,” he added.
