Poll: 25 percent of voters plan on spending more during holiday season

A quarter of voters say they plan on spending more this holiday season than last year, according to a Hill-HarrisX poll released on Tuesday.

The nationwide survey showed that 25 percent of voters said that they plan on spending more on holiday gifts this year compared to what the spent in 2018. Another 22 percent said they planned on spending less.

Just over half — 53 percent — said they planned on spending about the same amount.

This upbeat view on holiday spending is likely a positive sign for President Trump heading into the 2020 elections, given that consumer spending accounts for roughly two-thirds of the U.S. economy.

Trump has touted a strong economic performance throughout his presidency, especially amid the impeachment inquiry being led by House Democrats. Last week, Democratic-controlled House impeached Trump on two charges — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

A day after being impeached by the House, Trump once again claimed that “we have the greatest economy in the history of our country.”

“We’ve never done so well,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday.

The economy, which has been a cornerstone of his administration, has indeed soared during Trump’s tenure in office.

The U.S. economy has continued to push through a global economic slowdown, with 266,000 jobs being added to the American economy in November, according to the Labor Department. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, remained steady at 3.5 percent.

The Hill-HarrisX survey was conducted among 1,000 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
