Iraq rocket attack kills defense contractor, wounds troops
An American contractor was killed and several U.S. service members and Iraqi personnel were injured Friday in a rocket attack in northern Iraq, according the Pentagon.
The Defense Department’s Operation Inherent Resolve said in a statement shared with The Hill that the civilian contractor was killed during a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base in Kirkuk.
The statement did not say how many people were injured or give information on the seriousness of their injuries.
The response and investigation is being led by Iraqi security forces.
The Associated Press reported that up to 30 rockets were fired at the facility, which also hosted U.S. troops.
Protests broke out in the country in October, leaving many people dead. They began as demonstrations against government corruption, unemployment and the lack of basic services.
The AP on Friday placed the death toll of the protests at more than 450, and reported that most were killed by security forces.
