Hill.TV host Saagar Enjeti says President Trump would “do very well” to remember his opposition to further military entanglements in the Middle East in light of the president’s ordering of a drone strike that resulted in the death of a top Iranian commander.
“Nobody railed against war in the Middle East and the stupidity of U.S. foreign policy more than Donald Trump and he would do very well to remember it,” Enjeti said on Monday.
Enejti also downplayed the killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani in the airstrike, arguing that military officials are just as much to blame.
“U.S. policy is made nearly as much at the White House as it is in the stale, fluorescent hallways of the Pentagon and surrounding buildings in Washington,” he said.
Trump previously campaigned on the promise of getting the U.S. out of “never-ending wars.”
However, following the airstrike that killed Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the Pentagon said that it was preparing to send an additional 3,500 soldiers to the Middle East, according to multiple reports.
Trump has defended his decision on the airstrike, arguing that he authorized it in order to “to stop a war.”
The move has faced scrutiny from Democrats.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the president carried out the strike without authorization from Congress and that she, along with other top lawmakers, was only made aware of the attack after the fact. The House is now expected to vote on a resolution limiting Trump’s military actions towards Iran.
Iran, meanwhile, has vowed to take revenge on the U.S. for the airstrike.
“I promise to continue martyr Soleimani’s cause as firmly as before with the help of God, and in return for his martyrdom we aim to get rid of America from the region,” Gen. Esmail Ghaani, Soleimani’s successor, said Monday.
