Iran sentences two people as CIA spies

Two people working for a charity have been sentenced to over a decade in prison on charges of spying for the CIA, Iranian officials confirmed Tuesday, Reuters reported.

“Two … CIA spies who were working under the cover of an organization and charitable foundation have been identified, tried and sentenced to ten years in prison for spying and five years in prison for acting against national security,” Iran’s judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said, according to the news service. 

The identities of the imprisoned people have not been released yet because the sentence has not yet been finalized, Esmaili added.

The news came on the same day Iran announced that its top court confirmed a death sentence for Amir Rahimpour, an Iranian man convicted of spying for the CIA. State media has alleged that he shared details of Tehran’s nuclear program with U.S. officials, ABC News reported.

The CIA declined to comment.
