Ocasio-Cortez: ‘Impossible’ to find a good bacon, egg and cheese in DC

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) joked about Washington, D.C., cuisine in a new clip with Bronx comedians Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, mocking the capital city’s lack of bodegas.

Speaking in a signature New York bodega, Ocasio-Cortez joked to the comedians that it’s “impossible” to get a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich in Washington.

“There’s no bodegas anywhere. I don’t know how anybody eats in Washington, D.C., which probably explains why everyone’s fighting all the time,” Ocasio-Cortez said. The lawmaker revealed that she prefers cheddar cheese on her sandwich, but she will also eat American.

The freshman lawmaker explained that during her 2018 primary race against then-incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley III (D-N.Y.), her campaign posters were sometimes torn down and bodega employees would include postcards for her campaign alongside customers’ food. 

Later in the segment, Ocasio-Cortez demonstrated her bartending ability for the comedians, who host the Showtime late-night talk show “Desus and Mero.” Ocasio-Cortez worked as a bartender before her congressional bid, and she denied that she considers criticism about her former jobs an insult.

“I feel like people are always clowning themselves when they say that because it’s like, oh, OK, so you think every person you represent that’s a bartender, a waitress, a working person, what, that they can’t do this job? Because let me tell you, I work with some of these people, and they are not smarter than a bartender,” Ocasio-Cortez said while making two margaritas and a “Shirley Temple” with Hennessy cognac.
