Sunday shows preview: Top tier 2020 Democrats make their case before New Hampshire primary

Top 2020 Democratic presidential candidates will make the rounds on the Sunday network show circuit to make their case as the New Hampshire primary approaches this Tuesday.

The New Hampshire contest will be the first-in-the-nation primary following the disastrous Iowa caucuses that took place this week. 

Monday’s caucus in the Hawkeye State left the candidates, voters and Iowa Democratic Party (IDP) in chaos and uncertainty this week after technical difficulties led to late results and questions over accuracy.

However, once the full results were released on Wednesday, two contenders — Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg — came out on top virtually tied with about 26% of the vote each. Buttigieg lead the pack by a tenth of a percentage point. 

Both Sanders and Buttigieg, along with Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tom Perez, who has called for a recanvass of the caucus, will be on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday morning. The former mayor and the Vermont independent will also make an appearance on host Chris Wallace’s show “Fox News Sunday.” 

Buttigieg and Sanders are both booked on CBS’ “Face The Nation” as well as NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Though both candidates were neck-and-neck in Iowa, a CNN poll released Saturday showed Sanders 7 points ahead of Buttigieg in New Hampshire.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, another top contender in the race, is booked on ABC’s “This Week” as well as Univision’s “Al Punto” with Jorge Ramos. Her appearance comes amid reports of complaints from women of color in her Nevada campaign and as her campaign kicks off a five-city tour in Texas with a focus on Latino voters. 

Former Vice President Joe Biden will be on ABC’s “This Week” after releasing a pointed ad against Buttigieg that questions whether he has sufficient experience for the White House. 

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who polled in fifth place in Iowa, is notably not booked on any mainstream cable TV shows on Sunday as of Saturday afternoon. 

Two days after the Iowa caucuses, president Trump was acquitted by the Senate on articles of impeachment. Major players on the GOP side of the impeachment proceedings are booked Fox News Channel’s  “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), and Reps Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) and Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga), ranking members of the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees, respectively will appear on the program.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, will be CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday morning as well.
