CHICAGO — Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on the first night of the Democratic National Convention on Monday, touting a message of unity ahead of the four-day event.

“This is going to be a great week and I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible president Joe Biden who will be speaking later tonight,” Harris told supporters at the packed United Center.

Harris was greeted by roaring applause from supporters as she walked out on stage to her campaign’s theme song, Beyonce’s “Freedom.”

The vice president addressed Biden directly during her address, turning to face the camera and thanking him for his leadership.

“Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation and for all you continue to do,” she said “We are forever grateful to you.”

Biden was the keynote speaker on Monday, in a moment that has been described as a generational passing of the torch moment between Biden and Harris.

Harris went on to address the convention, urging unity among her supporters.

“And looking out at everyone tonight, I see the beauty of our great nation. People from every corner of our country and ever walk of life are here, united by our shared vision for our country ,” Harris said. “And this November, we will come together and declare with one voice as one people we are moving forward.”

Harris is slated to speak on Thursday when she will formally accept the party’s nomination for president.
