‘Way past time’ US elects woman as president, actor Sean Astin says

(NEXSTAR) – You may recognize Sean Astin for his roles in “Rudy,” “The Goonies,” “Lord of The Rings,” and even more, but in Chicago this week, he has a new title: delegate.

Astin is among the thousands of delegates at the Democratic National Convention putting their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Astin said that while he supported Biden following the debate earlier this year, he’s glad “how it’s played out” ever since.

“Something is happening in the country. It’s not me, it’s bigger than me, it’s bigger than everybody,” Astin said. “The fever has broken. In my opinion, the fever has broken.”

The “Rudy” actor was among a group of actors that included Jeff Bridges, Mark Hamill, and Josh Gad who attended a “White Dudes for Harris” Zoom in July that were working to rally support for Harris. The call raised more than $4 million for the campaign.

Since then, Astin has been hitting the road for the Harris campaign, stopping in New York, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

“I wanted the [Harris] campaign to see that I’m going to leave, like, a Sean-sized hole in the wall wherever they’ll let me,” he explained. “I just want to know I did everything I possibly could.”

Astin previously campaigned for Hillary Clinton in 2008 and 2016. He said a slogan he used that still applies today: “It is way past time that this country elect a strong and powerful woman as president of the United States of America.”
