Oversight Committee room to be dedicated to late Rep. Elijah Cummings
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) are slated to officially dedicate the panel’s hearing room in honor of former Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Thursday.
Pelosi’s office announced on Tuesday that she and Maloney will co-host the dedication later this week, paying tribute to the late congressman’s tenure on the committee.
“As our nation celebrates Black History Month, a bipartisan group of Members of Congress will join together to name 2154 Rayburn House Office Building, the ‘Elijah E. Cummings Room,'” the notice of the dedication said.
Cummings, a widely respected senior lawmaker and civil rights advocate, died in October at the age of 68 from health complications.
Despite playing a leading role in the impeachment inquiry, the Maryland Democrat managed to maintain strong relationships with members on both sides of the aisle. He was first elected to the House in 1996 and served as the leading Democrat on the committee from 2011 until the time of his death.
Maloney was selected to lead the panel shortly after Cummings passed away.
