The last COVID-19 patients were released on Sunday from a hospital in Wuhan, where the novel coronavirus is believed to have originated, Chinese officials said.

All 12 patients were released from the hospital after recovering, according to a Monday briefing from the Chinese government

Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, also reported no new cases of confirmed infections, as well as no new suspected cases and no new deaths.

More than 1,700 people who had close contact with an infected person remain under medical observation, The Associated Press reported, citing the province’s health commission.

“It is a historic day,” a report in a newspaper owned by the Wuhan government and posted on the city’s website said, according to the AP.

Officials reported a total of 3,869 deaths from the infection in Wuhan, representing roughly 80 percent of the total 4,637 reported deaths in China.

Elsewhere in China, patients remain hospitalized, including 67 in Shanghai and three in Beijing, according to the AP.

U.S. intelligence agencies have reportedly concluded, however, that China has undercounted coronavirus cases and deaths.
