America’s Unfinished Business: An LGBTQ+ Summit

There has been monumental progress on LGBTQ+ rights in recent decades, as mainstream cultural shifts drove wider acceptance and committed allies won long-fought battles at the local, state and federal levels. Same-sex couples won the right to legally marry and all that follows. And despite attempts to block implementation, transgender service members are openly serving in the military.

Yet, as we write this, many Americans continue to suffer daily discrimination, marginalization and violence in their homes, schools, neighborhoods and workplaces, in acts seen and unseen, big and small.

The civil rights that same-sex couples and LGBTQ citizens have secured in the recent decade are fragile and increasingly in doubt in a country that is deeply divided along many lines. LGBTQ+ Americans still face violent discrimination and bias, particularly LGBTQ+ communities of color.

On June 30, 2020 The Hill held a Pride month summit to discuss the fragility of civil rights in America today with a focus on the LGBTQ+ community. The forum focused on constructive paths forward and lessons learned from civil rights advances.
