Advancing America’s Economy: The Role of Private Capital

Private equity has emerged as one of the key drivers of business investment, innovative reorientation, and expansion in the country. In the beginning, the notion that groups would invest in parts of firms and reap rewards from that investment was non-controversial, but with scale and success has come, in some cases, massive wealth and some controversy.

Private capital can play a substantial role in job creation and can help give businesses across nearly every sector strategic leaps forward. But a trustworthy partnership between private equity and the public must be established. As the US reels from a pandemic-induced economic downturn, private equity firms could bring businesses back from the brink and create jobs for millions of Americans feeling the crunch of unemployment and resulting financial losses.

What is the responsible equilibrium for private interests and public good when it comes to private equity funds and the rules by which they operate? How can private equity be a catalyst for job and community growth? What does a roadmap to economic recovery look like and who should be the players at the table?

The Hill hosted a discussion with policymakers, business leaders, and experts about the role of private equity in advancing America’s economy.
