The District of Columbia has seen four consecutive days with no coronavirus deaths for the first time since late March, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) announced Monday.
D.C., however, recorded an uptick in new cases, tallying 59 new cases Monday after the city saw numbers of new daily cases consistently in the 20s and 30s in late June and early July. The city has reported 10,906 COVID-19 cases and 568 deaths since the outbreak began.

“While we are very happy to see no loss of life in the District, we always are aware that you first see an increase in cases, followed by an increase in hospitalizations, followed by an increase in deaths and each one of those indicators tend to lag by two weeks,” Bowser said Monday.

“We know that the virus is not gone. It continues to circulate in our city and I don’t know that we can say more than that but in some cases, people are increasing their level of activity and their contacts,” she added.
Bowser on Monday announced the city would be holding off on previous plans to reopen public swimming pools this week, and expects city officials to discuss reopening plans for D.C. Public Schools Thursday. Bowser said in order to enter phase three of reopening, the city needs to experience 14 days of decreased cases.
Meanwhile, Arizona, California, Florida, Mississippi and Texas broke records for average daily coronavirus-related fatalities over the past week, while 20 states and Puerto Rico reported a record-high average of new infections.
New York City on Sunday reported zero coronavirus deaths for the first time since March.
At least 3.3 million cases and more than 135,000 deaths have been reported in the U.S. since the outbreak began.
