Cardinals baseball team confirms four more coronavirus cases

The St. Louis Cardinals baseball team reported another four positive COVID-19 cases on Saturday, including one player, according to multiple reports.

The news comes as the Major League Baseball (MLB) team also reported two positive cases on Friday. As a result, the team had to call off games against the Milwaukee Brewers Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 

The Saturday cases were confirmed using rapid coronavirus tests. 

News of the confirmed cases comes as several teams have seen COVID-19 infections among players and staff, further imperiling the MLB season and pushing scheduled games off to further dates.

The Miami Marlins confirmed 18 players and two coaches have tested positive for the virus, delaying their season until Tuesday, when they are expected to continue playing.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred insisted on Saturday to ESPN’s Karl Ravech that, “We are playing. The players need to be better, but I am not a quitter in general and there is no reason to quit now.  We have had to be fluid, but it is manageable.”

The Cardinals team will remain in isolation at a hotel in Milwaukee, Wisc., where they are receiving daily COVID-19 tests and using contact tracing services, according to the Washington Post.

The Cardinals’ next series is with the Detroit Tigers. The series has been delayed from Monday to Tuesday, and the teams will play all four games in Detroit instead of two games in each of the teams’ respective cities. 

The baseball season began last week, instead of the usual late March or early April opening, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
