Waters rips Trump, GOP over mail-in ballots: ‘They’ll lie, cheat and steal to stay in power’

House Financial Services Committee Chair Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Monday blasted President Trump’s repeated attacks on mail-in voting, accusing him of deliberately sabotaging the U.S. Postal Service.

“Trump put Postmaster DeJoy in charge of the postal service to dismantle the USPS & sabotage vote by mail. New procedures are causing massive delays,” Waters tweeted.

“Trump & Repubs don’t believe in free & fair elections. They’ll lie, cheat, & steal to stay in power,” she added. “We’ve got to fight back!”

Louis DeJoy, a North Carolina businessman and prominent Trump donor, was named postmaster general in May, raising concerns among Democrats. Last week, four Democratic senators in a letter to DeJoy asked him to address complaints about slower mail delivery since he assumed the position in June.

“It is essential that the Postal Service not slow down mail or in any way compromise service for veterans, small businesses, rural communities, seniors, and millions of Americans who rely on the mail – including significant numbers who will be relying on the Postal Service to exercise their right to vote,” they wrote.

Trump has vocally opposed voting by mail, despite doing it himself in Florida’s Republican primary this year. Last week, he suggested the election should be delayed rather than allow the practice during the coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday morning, he blasted Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) over a planned expansion of mail-in voting in the state, accusing Sisolak of “[making] it impossible for Republicans to win the state.” Trump has previously threatened to withhold funding from states that expand access to mail-in voting during the pandemic.
