Watch: House Democrats target Trump actions in event post-joint address
House Democrats will hold an event Wednesday afternoon at the Capitol, seeking to elevate the stories of “everyday Americans” who they argue have been harmed by President Trump’s sweeping actions and Republican-led budget initiatives.
The “Voices of American People” event, announced by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Monday, comes a day after Trump gave his joint address before Congress. Many Democrats chose to boycott the speech or walked out during his remarks. Others opted to hold up signs in protest and one lawmaker, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), was escorted out of the chamber after an outburst.
Jeffries defended the “majority” of his colleagues during the address, but stopped short of commenting on the protests.
Democrats have also pushed back on GOP-led budget blueprints, requesting assurances that the president would use funds as they are appropriated before throwing their support behind a resolution. Congress has less than 10 days before funding lapses.
The event is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. EST.
