ABC promotes Derek Medina to EVP of news division

ABC has promoted 22-year veteran Derek Medina to executive vice president of its news division, the network announced Friday. 

Medina “will manage our operational efforts and growth strategies and work with me and all our leaders on advancing the culture,” per the announcement. Responsibilities include overseeing ABC News’s operations, marketing, business affairs, news practices and news administration. 

“I feel incredibly humbled and honored to have this opportunity to serve the organization in this role,” Medina said Friday on a staff call released by ABC. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be able to work alongside so many wonderful colleagues for the past 22 years. 

“The work that you do, all of you, makes me profoundly proud,” he continued. “I’m thrilled to continue to learn from each of you, to continue to stay focused on the content and how our employees are doing, feeling and progressing while doing the work that they love so much. It’s incredibly important to our future, and I plan to take it on with an incredible amount of passion and joy.”

ABC News is enjoying a successful year, particularly with “World News Tonight with David Muir.” The evening newscast continues to lead rivals NBC and CBS, winning in ratings for the past 29 weeks with an average of more than 8.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

“[Medina] has a well-established reputation inside and outside the company for delivering outstanding business results while maintaining the highest standards of personal integrity, trust and collaboration,” ABC News President James Goldston said in a staff memo. 

Medina joined the network in 1998 as business affairs director.
