Car covered in anti-globalization slogans crashes into gate of German chancellor’s office
A car covered with anti-globalization and other messages slammed into a barrier outside of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office on Tuesday.
Video obtained by Reuters shows the small black vehicle surrounded by officers outside the facility where it stopped after crashing into the large metal fencing.
Various phrases were seen scrawled in white paint across its body in German, and reportedly read “Stop Globalization Politics” and other messages criticizing climate change as well as one that read “Nicole, I love you.”
Authorities detained a 54-year-old man after the crash, according to Reuters, and are working to determine whether he was experiencing mental health issues at the time of the crash.
“The Chancellor, other members of the government and people working in the Chancellery were not in danger at any time,” said a spokesperson for Germany’s government.
A Berlin newspaper reported that the same vehicle had struck the Chancellery’s gates six years ago, Reuters noted.
Wednesday’s crash follows a number of terrorist attacks in France and Austria that have put law enforcement officials across Europe on high alert.
