Watch: House Republicans give remarks amid pressure to pass Trump agenda
House GOP leadership gave remarks Wednesday morning following their closed-door meeting as they race the clock to advance President Trump’s legislative agenda before Memorial Day.
Some of the hiccups that continue to plague the lower chamber of Congress are cuts to social programs, such as Medicaid and food stamps, as well as advancing an expansion of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts — including state and local tax deductions.
The House Ways and Means Committee advanced a portion of the president’s tax priorities earlier Wednesday, setting the stage for a high-stakes sprint to get the provision through despite Republicans’ thin majority — and over to the less-than-enthusiastic Senate.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has voiced optimism that the House will get through the impasse.
The press conference was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EDT.
