Biden says he’s ‘confident’ his son Hunter Biden did nothing wrong
President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday said he’s confident his son, Hunter Biden, did nothing wrong amid an investigation into his taxes.
“Are you confident your son Hunter did nothing wrong?” Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked following an event where Biden formally introduced Pete Buttigieg as his pick for Transportation secretary.
“I’m confident,” Biden replied.
It marked just the second time Biden has commented on his son’s situation since it was made public last week. The president-elect told reporters last week “I’m proud of my son” when asked if Hunter Biden had committed a crime.
Hunter Biden issued a statement last Wednesday confirming that the U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware is investigating his taxes, saying he had learned of the probe just a day earlier.
“I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” Hunter Biden said in a statement issued by the Biden-Harris transition team.
CNN reported that federal authorities are investigating Hunter Biden’s business dealings with foreign countries such as China, including potential violations of tax and money laundering laws. The investigation reportedly began as early as 2018.
President Trump has seized on the revelation, reportedly pushing for a special counsel to be appointed to investigate Biden’s son. If a special counsel took over the investigation, it would be more difficult for the Biden administration to stop the probe.
Trump was also reportedly furious at Attorney General William Barr, who is said to have known about the investigation into Hunter Biden for months before it was made public. Trump spent the weeks leading up to Election Day attacking Hunter Biden over his business dealings and portraying the Biden family as corrupt.
Barr announced this week that he would step down from the Trump administration.
