Disneyland to serve as ‘super’ vaccine distribution site

Disneyland is set to serve as a “super” distribution site for COVID-19 vaccines in Southern California as soon as this week. 

Orange County’s Board of Supervisors confirmed in a Monday statement that the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., will serve as the county’s first “super point-of-dispensing” site.”  

The site “will be operational later this week,” the board said. The California county is currently vaccinating health care workers, residents of long-term care facilities, residents over the age of 75 and others in the state’s highest-priority tiers for the inoculations.

The Disneyland site will eventually serve as one of five large point of dispensing (POD) sites for the vaccine that “will have the capacity to vaccinate thousands of residents each day,” officials added. Locations for the additional sites have not been confirmed.

“I’m proud to have Disneyland Resorts and the City of Anaheim, both in my Fourth District, be the first of the Super POD sites in Orange County,” Doug Chaffee, a county supervisor, said in the statement. “Residents in my district have been highly impacted by COVID-19. These Super PODs are absolutely critical in stopping this deadly virus.” 

Southern California has been hit with a surge of coronavirus cases that has overwhelmed intensive care units and overcrowded hospitals.

The state on Monday reported 40,540 new COVID-19 cases, as well as 381 fatalities.
