Illinois police fatally shoot 13-year-old boy in ‘armed confrontation’

A 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by Illinois police Monday after what police called an “armed confrontation,” according to media reports.

The victim was identified on Thursday as Adam Toledo, 13, of Little Village, by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, according to Chicago ABC 7. Adam died at the scene.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on desk duty for 30 days while the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates the shooting, according to Chicago ABC 7.

In a statement reported by the affiliate, police said officers responded to an alert about 2:35 a.m. and saw two males standing in an alley.

One armed person ran from the scene and was shot in the chest by a police officer during an “armed confrontation” in the 2300 block of South Sawyer Avenue, police said.

Police also arrested and charged 21-year-old Ruben Roman Jr. with a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.

Adam’s mother told ABC 7 that he had aspirations of becoming a police officer one day.
