One dead, one injured after shooting at Nebraska mall

One person died and another was injured Saturday during a shooting in Omaha, Neb., the Omaha Police Department said in a statement.

Shots rang out at the Westroads Mall near J.C. Penney around noon Saturday, the Omaha Police Department said in a tweet following the incident.

An adult male victim was taken to the CHI Bergan Mercy Hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The other victim, an adult female, was treated for a non-life-threatening injury at Immanuel Hospital, police confirmed.

Police noted the incident was not random, and the victims’ identities will be released at a later time.

Police did not provide a description of the suspects, who they said are still at large.

The shooting, one of many across the U.S. in recent weeks, comes just days after Nebraska Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts declared his state a “Second Amendment Sanctuary State.”

The Wednesday proclamation signaled Nebraska’s support for gun rights.

“The White House and U.S. Congress have announced their intention to pursue measures that would infringe on the right to keep and bear arms,” Ricketts wrote on Twitter. “Nebraska will stand up against federal overreach and attempts to regulate gun ownership and use in the Good Life.”
