Singer Demi Lovato announced on Wednesday that they identify as nonbinary and will change their pronouns to use “they/them.”

“I want to take this moment to share something very personal with you,” Lovato said in a video shared on Twitter on Wednesday. “Over the past year and a half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work, and through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as nonbinary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them.”

“I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering,” they continued.

The former Disney star wrote on Twitter on Wednesday alongside the video that “Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity & chance to be who we want & wish to be. I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, & everything in between.”

“Not only has my life been a journey for myself,  I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras,” they said, adding that “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all.”

Lovato on the first episode of their podcast “4D with Demi Lovato” said that “it would mean the world” if people would use their correct pronouns, although they will “be accepting” if people mistakenly use she/her pronouns. The singer said they want people “to be making the effort.”

The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer earlier this year opened up about sexuality during an interview on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” describing themself as pansexual.

“I’m so fluid now, and a part of the reason why I am so fluid is because I was, like, super closeted off,” they said.

Lovato added that they “felt a lot of shame” after realizing as a child that they are attracted to female individuals “because growing up in Texas as a Christian, that’s very frowned upon.”

“Any attraction that I ever had toward a female at a young age, I shut it down before I even let myself process what I was feeling,” they said.
