National Weather Service confirms two tornadoes hit DC on Thursday

The National Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes hit Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

One tornado hit Arlington, Va., right outside of D.C., with winds up to 90 mph, and another tornado hit the middle of D.C., four miles from the National Mall, with 60 mph winds, the weather service said, NBC Washington reported.

The tornadoes and severe thunderstorms left more than 300,000 homes without power in Maryland and Virginia. D.C. saw more than 10,000 homes without power.

The storms ripped down the fencing that was up for the Fourth of July celebration, while one man from Arlington had to go to the hospital after a tree fell on his house, according to the outlet. 

Montgomery County Fire Department had some homes evacuated on Friday after wires that were brought down by the storm posed a “significant electrical hazard.”

One building in Northeast D.C. fell during the storm with officials saying it is unclear what caused the collapse. 

The storm also disrupted preparations made for the fireworks the city plans to set off for Independence Day.
