Athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics will be tasked with putting on their own medals.

“The medals will not be given around the neck,” International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach told a media conference call. “They will be presented to the athlete on a tray and then the athlete will take the medal him or herself.”

The move comes amid a number of safety restrictions being put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa announced there would be no spectators present at the Olympics as Japan continues to struggle with rising coronavirus case numbers.

On Wednesday, Tokyo’s government reported an almost six-month high of new COVID-19 cases amid a state of emergency.

The Olympics are scheduled to begin on Friday, July 23.
