Biden announces $10 billion commitment to fighting world hunger

President Biden on Tuesday pledged the U.S. would commit $10 billion to end hunger domestically and around the globe during remarks to world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.

“At a time when nearly one in three people globally do not have access to adequate food — adequate food, just last year — the United States is committing to rallying our partners to address immediate malnutrition and to ensure that we can sustainably feed the world for decades to come,” Biden said in prepared remarks.

“To that end, the United States is making a $10 billion commitment to end hunger and invest in food systems at home and abroad,” he added.

Biden did not elaborate on how or when the money would be distributed. The United Nations is convening a Food Systems Summit on Thursday as part of this week’s gathering of leaders in New York City.

The summit will include comments from nearly 100 heads of state and government addressing their plans for establishing more sustainable food systems.

The United Nations had set out a goal to end world hunger and malnutrition by 2030, but those efforts have been complicated by the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
