FBI raids NYPD’s sergeant union headquarters

The FBI raided the headquarters of the New York Police Department’s sergeants union on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the FBI’s New York office told The Hill that the agency is “carrying out a law enforcement action in connection with an ongoing investigation” at the headquarters of the New York Sergeants Benevolent Association.

The spokesperson declined to confirm the details of the investigation.

The Hill has reached out to the union for comment.

Asked about the raid, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) said during a news briefing on Tuesday that it was “much too soon” to provide any details because he had just been notified.

“All I’ve been told is that the FBI has raided the SBA headquarters, and it’s in connection with an ongoing investigation, but we don’t have any further details of that at this moment,” de Blasio said.

The union claims to represent about 13,000 active and retired NYPD sergeants.

The raid was first reported by The New York Daily News. Union president Ed Mullins could not be reached for the outlet’s request for comment.

Mullins, a fierce critic of de Blasio, took over as leader of the union in 2002, according to The Daily News.

Mullins had come under fire last year after information appeared on the organization’s Twitter page about the arrest of de Blasio’s daughter, Chiara de Blasio, during a protest over the arrest of George Floyd.
