NYC mayor-elect says he’ll take first three payments in bitcoin

New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams (D) announced on Twitter Thursday he will be taking his first three payments as mayor in Bitcoin.

“In New York we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in Bitcoin when I become mayor,” Adams tweeted.

“NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!” he added.

Adams won the city’s mayoral election on Tuesday, beating his Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa.

He will replace Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), who was not able to run for office again because of term limits. 

“Tonight, we celebrate — because tomorrow, the real work begins!” Adams tweeted after garnering 75 percent of the vote in the city. 

Adams’s Twitter announcement comes as bitcoin continues to gain popularity, with some companies beginning to accept the cryptocurrency as a form of payment. 

Theater chain AMC announced in August it would accept bitcoin by the end of 2021. 

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said Tesla will likely accept bitcoin again, after previously disallowing the cryptocurrency due to environmental concerns.
