President Biden has decided who he will be nominating to replace outgoing Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, multiple news outlets reported on Thursday.
The news outlets did not indicate which nominee the president had decided on, but reported the president had made his choice. People familiar with the selection told CNN, which was the first news outlet to report the news, that he had come to a decision and that it could be made public as early as Friday.
Those people, however, would not confirm to the network if the president had extended his offer to his pick.
Some legal experts think that D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson may be Biden’s pick, noting that the court on Thursday issued an opinion, which it typically does on Tuesdays and Fridays, CNN reported.
Jackson gained an endorsement on Wednesday from civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who urged Biden to choose her as his nominee.
“There will be no learning curve for Judge Jackson, she knows the law, has adjudicated it well, and is battle tested. Jackson has the educational credentials and commitment which put her in an elite with which the Court is familiar, having the same credentials as most of the modern justices, if not more than,” Crump said in
an op-ed for The Hill on Wednesday.
However, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) have voiced their support for South Carolina federal district judge J. Michelle Childs.
“People have been talking to me everywhere I go, people tell me what an outstanding jurist Michelle Childs is, and that she ought to be fitted for a promotion,” Clyburn
said in an interview with CNN last month.
Jackson, Childs and California Supreme Court Justice Leondra Kruger have all met with Biden during his selection process, multiple sources have told CNN.
