Camp: No tax reform bill this year.

House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp conceded Wednesday that he won’t release a tax reform bill this year.

“We’re running out of time,” Camp told reporters in the Capitol.

House Republicans are scheduled to leave Washington for good at the end of next week.

{mosads}Camp had vowed to pass a bill out of committee this year, before starting to backtrack last month. A Camp aide told tax reform supporters in recent weeks that the chairman hoped to release a tax overhaul in either December or January.

In recent days, Camp has declined to lay out a timeline for reform, as GOP leaders remain all too happy to keep the healthcare law’s troubles front-and-center.

House and Senate negotiators have also said they’re getting closer to a budget deal, just over a week before their deadline.

Besides outside pressures, Camp has also faced some challenging projections from the Joint Committee on Taxation in trying to put a tax reform bill together. Ways and Means Republicans also acknowledge they have to step up their efforts to educate rank-and-file lawmakers about the trade-offs involved in tax reform.
