GOP senator: Momentum ‘on our side’

Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) squared off Sunday morning on national television ahead of the midterm elections.

Republicans have enough momentum to take back control of the Senate on Nov. 4, Portman said.

{mosads}“The voter intensity is on our side,” he told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “All the polls show this is going to be a good year for Republicans.”

But Schumer disputed the notion, saying Democrats will “prove the pundits wrong.”

“I think we will hold the Senate,” Schumer said. “I know all the pundits are saying Republicans will take the Senate. Democrats are going to prove the pundits wrong on Election Day when we keep the Senate.”

Schumer said he is confident more Democrat voters will turn out than pre-election polls are showing.

“We have a much better ground game [than Republicans],” Schumer said.

Schumer also indicated he would back Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) as majority leader while Portman said he continues to support minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
