The Washington Redskins are getting grilled on social media for sending out a celebratory Thanksgiving tweet.
Many Native Americans, who figure prominently in the story of the original Thanksgiving, find the NFL team’s name offensive.
Owner Dan Snyder has adamantly refused to change the team name, even after a federal judge ordered the cancellation of the Redskins’ trademark earlier this year.
President Obama said in 2013 that he’d “think about changing” the team’s name if he were owner.
Only 14 percent of Native Americans think the team should change its name, compared to 83 percent who think the name should stay, according to a 2014 Associated Press/Gfk poll.
Twenty-three percent of Americans also favor changing the name, according to an ESPN poll.
