A former spokesman for Mitt Romney slammed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie over his support for Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying the governor just wants to remain “relevant.”
“Chris Christie for his entire career has been for Chris Christie and nobody else,” Ryan Williams said in an interview on Boston Herald Radio on Monday.
“It’s pretty clear what’s behind Chris Christie’s endorsement, not that he supports Trump, he’s just looking to remain relevant, he’s looking to promote himself and that’s what Chris Christie has always been about.
{mosads}”I hope he’s treated going forward like the pariah that he is in the Republican party,” he said.
“No self respecting Republican should associate themselves with Chris Christie for the remainder of his time in public office.”
Williams added that even when Christie endorsed Romney for president in 2012, it was clear to people on the campaign that the New Jersey governor was “simply out for himself.”
“He was using the process to meet donors, to position himself to run for president four years later, to do anything he could to position himself for a presidential run,” he said.
When Christie was running against Trump, the governor criticized Trump a someone who wasn’t up to the job of being president, Williams said.
