Kaine dismisses Bill Clinton’s ‘past controversies’
Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine on Wednesday sought to dismiss his past comments criticizing former President Bill Clinton for his White House scandal.
{mosads}“I had some feelings of disappointment back then,” Kaine told KCRG about his 2002 quote on Clinton’s sex scandal. Kaine is now Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s running mate.
“That’s now 20 years. Now I’m thinking about, ‘What do we do to help this country be strong?’ Past controversies don’t have anything to do with that question.”
Kaine, who was interviewed amid an alleged scandal involving a Virginia politician in 2002, reportedly said that Bill Clinton should have resigned after the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
He told the Richmond Times-Dispatch at the time that if the allegations against the Virginia politician were true, he should resign. He said he “held the same view about President Clinton during the Lewinsky sex scandal.”
Kaine told KWWL this week that the report was “not inaccurate,” but he said there’s no reason to “re-litigate problems of 20 years ago.”
“As I’m campaigning all across the country, people are saying: What do we do to get an economy growing again with prosperity that’s shared? How do we make sure we are strong in the nation we’re strong alliances in the world? How do we make sure we build up a community of respect?” he said.
“So past controversies aren’t really important to the voters. They want to know what we are going to do tomorrow.”
